Brainstorming in the Shower

I was drying my hair yesterday when a great idea popped into my head. As soon as I finished, I went to tell my husband. I can’t tell you how many of my sentences begin with “I have an idea…” My husband, bless his heart, smiles a little and responds “of course you do.” It’s really an involuntary action. I don’t set out to conquer the day’s problems while showering, but I, like most busy moms, have very little quiet time each day. The quietest time of the day for me is after the kids go to bed, but by then my brain is not firing on all cylinders. In contrast, my sister’s creative juices do not begin flowing until after 9:00p and it’s not unusual for me to get emails from her well after I’ve gone to bed.

One December, a couple of years ago, I had been searching for Christian photo Christmas cards. I couldn’t find any modern designs with faith-based messages. While drying my hair, I suddenly thought that it would be a good idea to get my graphic designer sister to create a Christian Christmas card for my family. She loved the idea and quickly began working on some concepts. That little nugget started what would become our company.

Not every one of my showers leads to great inspiration, but I usually do a little problem-solving or planning during what I term my “quiet time.” As for my husband, he still patiently listens to each and every one of my wacky ideas or half-baked thoughts. He’s a good man and he inspires me every day.
